Liverpool announced on 5 September that Richard Hughes had stepped down as sporting director. The club said he had informed its ownership that he wanted a fresh challenge.
Hughes joined from Bournemouth in June 2024. Liverpool’s statement credits his work in football operations and recruitment during a period that included the 2024–25 league title and Champions League qualification the following season.
The club said the process of appointing a successor was under way. Its departure statement did not name a replacement or announce Hughes’s next role. Those points should remain open until a separate confirmation arrives.
